Smooth and Easy Days

Charlotte Mason‘s teachings have made a huge impact on my life and brought parenting and home schooling into a new light for me. We are creatures of habit and instilling good habits at an early age is of utmost importance. Not just habits of brushing teeth, putting things away and making their beds but cultivating habits of character too-honesty, courtesy, kindness, patience, respect, etc.

Here are a few of my favorite(of SO many) Charlotte Mason quotes:

“The mother who takes pains to endow her children with good habit secures for herself smooth and easy days; while she who lets their habits take care of themselves has a weary life of endless friction with the children.” (Vol. 1, p. 136)
“The habits of the child produce the character of the man.” (Vol. 1, p 118)
“Every day, every hour, the parents are either passively or actively forming those habits in their children upon which, more than upon anything else, future character and conduct depend.” (Vol. 1, p 118)
If you are curious to know more or love Charlotte Mason as much as I do and haven’t found this yet, the wonderful people over at have just released Sonya Shafer’s

It’s a short and easy read but very full of some of the wonderful things that Charlotte taught about habit formation. It may just get you thinking in a new way this new year.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting about the book, Maria! One of my favorite CM habit quotes is, "Let us not despise the day of small things nor grow weary in well-doing" (Vol. 3, p. 23).

I hope you don't mind but I copied and pasted these quotes into my blog, they summed up what I was talking about exactly! Thanks!

I am really loving this book! It came at a great time as I had lent out my copy of Laying Down the Rails and was missing it 🙂

I'll look forward to hearing more as your family reaps the rewards of cultivating habits!
