In the past month, 2 separate couples that we know have chosen to do away with unnatural birth control methods to embrace Natural Family Planning and have thanked us for being open and honest about it. Can I just start by saying how amazing that is!?!? Although we really can’t take credit for their decision, we know that all glory goes to God, we are thrilled to know that our experience has helped others.
We also recently attended an NFP wine and cheese social event, hosted by the Marriage and Family Life office of our local diocese. This was the first time such an event has been held in our area but it will certainly not be the last. It was a wonderful feeling to be in a room full of God-loving, NFP-using, not to mention really intelligent, devout Catholics(who were very “normal” and didn’t all have 10 kids!).
As if that wasn’t enough excitement and talk about our natural procreative abilities, we have been spending a whole lot of time at the Vitae Family Care Clinic in an effort to better understand what is happening with my body. We are actually starting to get some answers about why I get migraines, why my body has an issue with sustaining pregnancies, and the overall health of my reproductive system. Even though the answers don’t come easy(call me a pin cushion!) and there is a learning process, it is well worth it to know that we are not just taking a stab in the dark at treating my symptoms. We are getting to the root cause of the issues and dealing with them in a natural and effective way.
I have mentioned NFP here before and have since realized that many people are either misinformed or even just plain UN-informed about the what, why, and how of this beautiful gift from God. Having practiced it for over 15 years now, I guess I have taken it for granted and assumed that most people knew about it and just plain chose not to do it.
With the whole “green movement” going on, many people are starting to get serious about knowing what chemicals are going into their bodies via food, cleaners, health & beauty products, and the environment. Thankfully more and more women are waking up to the realization that it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to be concerned about our vegetables having been grown using chemicals if they are willingly putting a chemical into their body every day in the form of a birth control pill.
If being more “green” isn’t reason enough, Christian couples are beginning to question why they can trust God with every other aspect of their lives from their jobs to their health and well-being, but have not trusted Him with their family planning. They are realizing that in trying to control their fertility by artificial means, they are trying to play God. If we truly believe that we are made in His image and likeness and that He longs for us to be in relationship with Him, then why wouldn’t we embrace the perfect way that He has made our bodies to work naturally for His good and ours?
I would like to end by offering some resources for those of you who have questions, who are considering going natural, have recently made the switch, or are just curious what in the world I am even talking about.
If you stick around here a while you will likely see more posts about NFP. It is a topic and a practice that is near and dear to my heart and I think it is extremely important that we talk about it more. It has been a well-kept secret for way too long, it’s time to share the
good great news!
And just to give you something to come back for, NFP saved our marriage. I plan to write about that too….
NFP Myths and Reality It’s not just for Catholics, it’s not just for people who want to have a ton of babies, it really isn’t complicated, and it DOES work.
